are YOU competent?

Organisational competence is really made out of individual capability ~

  • If you are employed by an organisation, are YOU participating fully in the training that is made available by your employer?
  • If you are tasked with the duty of managing a team, are YOU ensuring your team are participating fully in the training that is made available by the employer?
  • If you are an employer, are YOU ensuring you have provided the appropriate training resources for your teams?

… three simple questions … and, it’s good to be in a positive position to be able to answer these before something goes wrong and someone gets injured – or worse!

In cases where a workplace fatality results in a prosecution, the jury may go on to consider the extent to which the evidence shows that there were attitudes, policies, systems or accepted practices within the organisation that were likely to have led to the failure.   Juries may now look at tolerance to poor practice too.   In fact, there is now very little to prevent the jury from having regard to any other matters they consider relevant.

The construction industry is full of hazardous traps for the untrained, and construction operations are not for the incompetent ~ so, play your part and ensure sharpened skills and strengthened expertise prevails across the team.

Motivation must be part of any successful team culture ~

  • Starting at the top, the employer must provide the best training resource to the team to ensure they have access to appropriate knowledge …
  • Team managers need to be competent to assess the risk profile of their team and ensure all their team is appropriately trained in the skills required …
  • Each individual ~ YOU ~ needs to ensure you are appropriately trained so that you can prove you are competent to undertake the tasks …

~ to increase your organization's overall performance and become highly motivated and strong performers; focus on the future; and aim for the goal of a zero accident culture.

What better motivation to improve personally than the fierce competition for jobs that will inevitably be created by the essential cuts on industry from the current global financial situation and the essential recovery plans being put in place?
